When I was a child, I frequently played chess with my grandmother. No matter how much the game upset her, she would always end up laughing and saying that I was a better player than she was. Years later, while playing a game of chess with a friend of mine, he said that he would prefer to play chess instead of checkers. The reason being that it is less destructive of clothes.
Upon hearing this, my grandmother pulled me aside and explained to me the difference between playing games and solving problems. In checkers, every piece has an equal chance of being taken off the board at any given time. In chess, only the king has that kind of safety net.
If you lose a piece in checkers, you can always get another one. In chess however, there is no safe place to put a piece back on the board if it is taken off. You can’t just replace one piece for another because when one piece is gone, it is gone forever.
My grandmother was correct in her explanation when she told me that playing games is less destructive of clothes than solving problems because when you solve problems you will lose pieces and even when you solve problems you will still be left with some pieces missing from your life such as love and trust because we don’t know who we can trust anymore or who we can love without our fears getting in the way again and again and again and again....
